Wood Processing Knives — Chipper Blades, Flaker Knives & Rotor Knives
Steellogy manufactures industrial knives for wood processing — wood chipper blades, flaker knives, planer knives and rotor knives — made to customer drawings in our own plant in Poland, with heat treatment in-house and delivery across the EU. Wood cutting means continuous impact loads and abrasive contaminants in the raw material; the grade and hardness are chosen for that duty, per order.
Wood Chipper Blades
Wood chipper blades cut logs and slabs to chips against counter (anvil) knives, taking continuous impact while holding a sharp edge. Edge condition directly affects chip size consistency, energy consumption and throughput; the dominant wear drivers are abrasion from bark grit, and chipping from stones or tramp metal. Steellogy produces wood chipper blades from air-hardening tool steels — A8 Modified (ASTM A681) and D2-class grades — chosen to balance impact resistance and edge retention.
Our wood chipper blades are compatible with drum and disc chippers from manufacturers including BRUKS, Hombak, Pallmann and B. Maier. Dimensions, edge geometry and clamping pattern are manufactured to the buyer-approved drawing.
Flaker Knives
Flaker knives cut the wood flakes and strands used in OSB (Oriented Strand Board), particleboard and MDF manufacturing. Flake thickness and dimensional consistency depend directly on knife sharpness and geometric accuracy, and carry through to final board properties. There is no published OEM hardness standard for flaker knives — grade and hardness are determined from your drawing or a worn sample and stated in the order confirmation.
Planer Knives and Moulder Blades
Planer knives and moulder blades produce the final visible surface on dimensional lumber, flooring, paneling and moulded profiles, so surface finish and edge geometry take priority. HSS and tungsten carbide grades are the common choices where long runs demand edge retention. Our planer knives fit Tersa-type and Centrolock-type cutterhead systems as well as conventional clamped heads — the clamping interface matters as much as the machine brand, so we confirm it from the drawing or the cutterhead model.
Rotor Knives for Wood Grinding
Rotor knives are heavy-duty blades used in wood grinders and shredders for waste wood and biomass processing. Contaminated wood streams can carry nails, stones and other foreign objects, so the grade is selected for toughness first. Steellogy rotor knives are produced from high-chromium cold-work tool steels; hardness is selected per application and stated in the order confirmation.
Steel Grades for Wood Processing Knives
Wood processing sets hardness against toughness differently for each application. For chipper blades, the usual choice is an air-hardening grade such as A8 Modified — its producer datasheet rates wear resistance above S7 and toughness above D2 — or a D2-class steel where abrasion dominates. Planer and moulder knives running finished surfaces are commonly made in HSS M2 or tungsten carbide for edge life. Numeric hardness is not a catalogue value: it is set per application from the drawing and the duty, and confirmed on the order. Similar principles apply to industrial knives for paper cutting and other cutting applications.
